Commissioning Manager - 132/33kV Substation DNO & Private Network Projects - Remote Working + Occasional Travel to Site - United Kingdom - 12 Month Contract - ASAP Start - Outside IR35 - £Excellent Day Rate

We are supporting a major UK power infrastructure contractor in the appointment of an experienced Commissioning Manager to remotely support a growing portfolio of high-voltage substation DNO & private networks projects across the UK.

The majority of the current workload is around 132kV, covering private networks and DNO connections across several patches. The business is also moving further into transmission-level work and ideally requires someone with 275/400kV commissioning expertise too.

This is not a hands on commissioning role or a position tied to one specific project. The successful candidate will provide commissioning leadership/management across multiple projects, supporting Project Managers from design and planning through testing, commissioning, compliance and energisation.

Key Details:

  • Location: Remote (occasional travel to projects across the UK when required)
  • Start Date: ASAP
  • Contract Duration: 12 months
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, with potential weekend work depending on requirements
  • Requirements: 5+ years' experience in 132-400kV substation commissioning management or commissioning engineering (DNO authorisations are not required)
  • Additional: Outside IR35

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage project commissioning strategies and execution plans.
  • Produce and review ITPs, commissioning plans, procedures and test documentation.
  • Develop commissioning programmes, sequencing and energisation plans.
  • Support Project Managers with commissioning readiness and technical decision-making.
  • Review designs, specifications, drawings and client requirements from a commissioning perspective.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities with designers, planners, subcontractors, DNOs and clients.
  • Manage and technically assure commissioning subcontractors.
  • Monitor commissioning progress against programme and identify risks, constraints and outstanding actions.
  • Ensure all testing, documentation and handover requirements are completed prior to energisation.
  • Lead commissioning readiness reviews and support energisation activities.
  • Manage technical interfaces between construction, commissioning, protection, control, SCADA and network stakeholders.
  • Support tender and pricing teams by reviewing commissioning scope, programme and resource requirements.
  • Ensure commissioning activities comply with relevant DNO, client, safety and quality standards.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years' experience in HV substation (132kV+) projects as a Commissioning Manager, Lead Commissioning Engineer or Senior Commissioning Engineer.
  • 5+ years' experience in DNO, TSO or private-network substation commissioning.
  • Good understanding of substation commissioning, energisation and technical assurance.
  • Experience reviewing commissioning documentation, drawings and programmes to identify commissioning risks.
  • Strong experience producing and reviewing ITPs, commissioning plans, procedures and test documentation.
  • Good understanding of primary plant, protection, control, SCADA and auxiliary systems.
  • Strong client-facing and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Current or previous TP141 authorisation is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Happy to work remotely from home, with occasional travel to project sites and client meetings across the UK.

This would suit an experienced Commissioning Manager/Engineer looking for remote role and broader technical advisory/managerial responsibilities across multiple projects.
